About the New Thunderbolt I/O Connectivity

Thunderbolt Logo

With the announcement by Intel® of the new Thunderbolt™ I/O technology and Apple® being the first customer to implement the Thunderbolt technology, we want to make sure that you all understand that this is simply an I/O protocol layer (such as SAS, FireWire, or USB) and all existing and future BRU™ products will support storage devices connected to the Thunderbolt channel both as sources and destinations for BRU backup and archival operations.

As of this writing (March 1, 2011), no tape vendor has indicated any type of support for the Thunderbolt technology, however, we expect to see Thunderbolt to SAS and Thunderbolt to Fibre-Channel adapters becoming available in the next year. These adapters, once available, will be designed to allow the use of standard SCSI and Fibre-Channel tape solutions in a Thunderbolt device chain.
